Stelarc – The Body is Obsolete – Contemporary Arts Media
Screener for Stelarc – The Body is Obsolete distributed online worldwide by Contemporary Arts Media (http://www.artfilms.com.au).
DVD & CD-ROM. Stelarc is an Australian artist who has performed extensively in Japan, Europe and the USA – including new music, dance festivals and experimental theatre. He has used medical instruments, prosthetics, robotics, Virtual Reality systems and the Internet to explore alternate, intimate and involuntary interfaces with the body. The DVD and accompanying CD-ROM feature an interview with Stelarc as well as descriptions and images of all his major artworks.
He has acoustically and visually probed the body-having amplified brainwaves, blood-flow and muscle signals and filmed the inside of his lungs, stomach and colon, approximately two metres of internal space. He has done twenty-five body SUSPENSIONS with insertions into the skin, in different positions and varying situations in remote locations. He has performed with a THIRD HAND, a VIRTUAL ARM, a VIRTUAL BODY and a STOMACH SCULPTURE.
For FRACTAL FLESH, as part of Telepolis, he developed a touch-screen interfaced Muscle Stimulation System, enabling remote access, actuation and choreography of the body. Performances such as PING BODY and PARASITE probe notions of telematic scaling and the engineering of external, extended and virtual nervous systems for the body using the Internet. In 1998 for Kampnagel, he completed EXOSKELETON – a pneumatically powered 6-legged walking machine actuated by arm gestures.
Current projects include the EXTRA EAR – a surgically constructed ear as an additional facial feature that coupled with a modem and a wearable computer will act as an internet antenna, able to hear RealAudio sounds. And MOVATAR is an intelligent avatar that performs in the real world by possessing a physical body. It will have a sound feedback loop from the body giving the virtual entity an ear in the world.
In 2000, he completed an EXTENDED ARM – a manipulator with eleven degrees-of-freedom that extends his arm to primate proportions and a MOTION PROSTHESIS – an intelligent, compliant servo-mechanism that enables the performance of precise, repetitive and accelerated prompting or programming of the arms in real-time. In 2002, with the collaboration of the Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems Group, COGs, University of Sussex and TNTU, the HEXAPOD robot prototype was developed.
In 2003 the PROSTHETIC HEAD, an embodied conversational agent that speaks to the person who interrogates it, was completed for New Territories, Glasgow. It was also shown at the ICA in London and Interaccess in Toronto. This was realized with Tissue Culture and Art Project from Perth. The 6-legged MUSCLE MACHINE was constructed with the assistance of The Nottingham Trent University Engineering team, using fluidic rubber muscle actuators. 1/4 scale replicas of the artist’s ear have been grown using mouse and human cells. These were exhibited at Galeria Kapelica in Ljubljana and for the Clemenger Contemporary Art Award at Ian Potter, NGV at Federation Square.
In 1995 Stelarc received a three year Fellowship from The Visual Arts/ Craft Board, The Australia Council. In 1997 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Art and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsurgh. He was Artist-In-Residence for Hamburg City in 1998. In 2000 he was awarded an Honorary Degree of Laws by Monash University. He completed an artist-in-residence position in Art and Technology, at the Faculty of Art and Design at Ohio State University in Columbus in March, 2003. He is Principal Research Fellow in the Performance Arts Digital Research Unit at The Nottingham Trent University. UK. His art is represented by the Sherman Galleries in Sydney.

(Santa Monica, CA) Just in time for the holidays, the Contemporary Crafts Market will return to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium for its 23rd season as the West Coast’s premiere event for one-of-a-kind functional and decorative crafts. This year’s Market will feature the distinctive works of over 250 of the nation’s finest artists, ranging from intricate jewelry, unique glassware and ceramics to hand-painted textiles, custom furniture, mixed-media creations and much more. All items on display and for sale have been jury-selected for their exceptional quality.
The Contemporary Crafts market has been a showcase for burgeoning and established talent for over two decades. Year after year, the market brings together an eclectic mix of artisans, while also allowing visitors to meet the artists behind some of the nation’s finest crafts.
Roy Helms, Contemporary Crafts Market Founder, has continually sought to raise awareness of fine crafts as a serious art form by highlighting talented artists who have created a name for themselves and whose works can be found in national and international museums or galleries.
“Each year, the Contemporary Crafts Market provides shoppers and collectors with some of the finest craft pieces from across the United States,” Helms explained. “This year will be no exception, as these artists have provided visitors with unique holiday gift ideas for the coming shopping season.”
This year’s market will include the work of Joyce Aysta of Live Your Dreams Designs, whose Origami Architecture is the combination of two ancient Japanese art forms: Origami — the art of folding paper, and Kirigami — the art of cutting paper. The result is a single sheet of cut and folded paper that when opened displays a stunning three-dimensional image. Her work has been used by the Smithsonian and other prominent institutions because of the uniqueness of the art form and the precision and intricacy of her greeting cards. Collections range from Judaica to Christmas ornaments to California landmarks, each one carefully cut and crafted to create an unforgettable holiday keepsake.
Also participating in the market is Jerzi Sanecki, who creates decorative brass and glass functional art. His pieces, which range from floor lights to fireplace screens, offer creative decorating solutions for homes and offices. Sanecki also constructs custom motifs that can be applied to his pieces to create a harmonious design scheme throughout any space. To create his hand-made pieces, the artisan draws inspiration from a variety of regions and styles, including intricate Ancient Egyptian designs and 20th century Art Deco practices. With over 20 years of experience in this field, Sanecki’s pieces adorn the interiors of both European and American spaces alike.
Sanecki will be joined by Rubaiyat, specializing in hand-crafted shoes for over four decades. The dynamic husband-and-wife duo of Louis and Melinda Whisler create carefully crafted styles that range from casual sandals to boots. Not only do these artisans craft ready-to-wear shoes, but customers also have the opportunity to participate in the design process by selecting from a wide variety of styles, colors and materials. With an eclectic assortment that range from classic brown flats to flaming red python pumps, Rubaiyat’s collection features styles fit for both men and women. The Whislers are dedicated to using their expertise and knowledge of this field to construct “wearable art” for the fashion-forward.
The Contemporary Crafts Market is held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, located at 1855 Main Street on the corner of Pico Boulevard. Show hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 31- November 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is $7.00 for adults and children under 12 are free. For additional information, call (310) 285-3655 or visit the website at www.CraftSource.org.

Personal Homage Oil Paintings
The artworks of the artist, Ariel Oren, refer to those of the greatest modern painters: Fernand Leger, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, while incorporating graphic influences and sophisticated two-dimensional and traditional animation.
His artwork may be referred to as post-modernistic homage. With a harmony of color and movement and emphasized contours, Oren takes us viewers back to the modern painting of the first half of the twentieth century.
He recreates and debates, breaks and constructs and presents a creation which combines the use of unique compositions, from his personal point of view. Thus a fascinating artwork is created as a jigsaw puzzle of modernistic influences; a puzzle which brings renewed observation that stimulates comparison and is situated between the modern and the contemporary.
