It depends on the …
It depends on the painting mediums you are using. If you are using a fairly quick drying medium, then about 1 day is fine. This is what I use. The more linseed oil, usually the longer the drying time. Some artists like this as it gives them more time to develop the work. I usually have a good idea of where I am going with a painting so as of now, I prefer the quicker drying mediums. You always want to put down the thinner layers first, followed by any thicker layers to prevent cracking.

Thanks a lot for making this vid for us! Interesting painting. I’m just starting to experiment with thicker brush strokes – as in you vid, is one day before the next thicker paint strokes about the drying time needed?

The canvas was …
The canvas was primed when I bought it, but I added my own gesso to the canvas as I transferred the drawing to the canvas. The gesso adds texture to the canvas and this seems to not only create a toothier surface to paint on, but it also seems to stimulate my imagination so that I make a bolder, more dynamic painting. Maybe you knew this, but some of the old Masters used to stare at old textured walls to fire up their creative faculties. Thanks for the comment. Henty

Yes, it is …
Yes, it is difficult to get lots of detail when there is a lot of texture. In general, texture is most effective in rendering larger shapes.

love the textured surface, is it difficult to get lots of detail on that much texture,(if used on small canvas, 16X20 or smaller)?
