Why do so many people hate contemporary or modern art?

Actually, I don’t think as many people hate modern art, but many people confuse contemporary art with modern art, so I thought I better include both.

Yes I agree with the above answer. Most people think of art as being something "pretty"- portraits, landscapes, something nice to look at. When modern and contemporary artists start to create things that make people think, that people cannot instantly recognize or get a grasp on, it is dismissed as not even being art.

what are some (not contemporary) artists from Buenos Aires?

I’ve already got a few contemporary artists from Buenos Aires, so I’m looking for some famous artists that are.. ya know.. not in buenos aires anymore. or anywhere.

You must be hard up for people to admire..

I’m interested in art (paintings, sculptors, modern, ancient, contemporary, classical etc.) and I am also?

interested in curing people. I am currently aspiring to become a pharmacist (I am an undergrad that has not yet applied to pharm. school) but I don’t want to really work in retail my whole life (well I will in the beginning to pay off my loans). I like interacting with people and I believe that their quality of life (during their illness) and how they choose to live it is more important than treating their ailment with drug after drug. This is why I want to work in a hospital setting where patient-pharmacist interaction is stressed. I know the science is important but just passing out the right drugs is not what pharmacy is about. I feel that there are other ways for patients to heal. I see the patient as a person with social, emotional and physical needs. The drugs definitely take care of the physical needs but sometimes they only do so temporarily and that is the best that they can do. For this reason a lot of patients are frustrated and grumpy and not relaxed. Anyways are there any career paths that combine medicine and art with focus on caring for the human being as a whole person? I am looking at fields with holistic medicine but I’m not sure.

there are many forms of "art therapy" that may incorporate you need for art and helping

How long does an oil painting take to dry?

I have been working with oil paints lately. I have never used them before for my art. I was just wondering if any fellow artist out there may know how long it takes for oil paints to dry? Its been over a day and my painting is still wet to the touch.

It depends entirely on the thickness of the paint and how many layers you have. Oil paint might appear to be dry to the touch but in general it takes 6 months to 1 year to dry 100%. At least dry enough that you can varnish it. But in all reality there are paintings hanging in the Louvre that are **not** 100% dry.

It ought to be dry to the touch after about a week or so, but if you want it to dry faster add Liquin to the paint or use paint and paint thinner/mineral spirits and it will dry much faster.

Why are most of the most expensive paintings modern?

I’m not saying they shouldn’t be, but "Old Masters" have usually been held in high esteem over many centuries, implying that they are less likely to go out of fahion and to go down in price, yet the most expensive paintings are almost all "modern" (i.e. 20th century). Why does modern art fetch a higher price?

It has to do with the tastes of people same as having the lack of it. I find that sometimes for some people they will pay a high price for what speaks to them. On the other hand you have the people that it neither speaks to them nor do they understand the art that they are buying. These people simply buy the piece as an investment on a hunch which can lead to catastrophe in the end. This is not to say that sometimes that hunch pays off but not every piece of art work that demands a high price is a work of art. If you look at history it is usually the works that take art in a whole new direction, make the viewer think or gives you the unexpected that survive the test of time. When purchasing anything, it should be because you love it regardless of he price. If it turns out to be a master piece then that’s an added bonus.
