Sherrie McGraw, Brodkin Contemporary Western Artists Project

Sherrie McGraw was interviewed in her Des Montes, New Mexico, studio on May 7, 2009, by Dickinson Research Center Director Chuck Rand. Curator of Art Ed Muno videotaped the interview. Studying at the Art Students League of New York, Sherrie was exposed to chiaroscuro painting in the tradition of Rembrandt and Velasquez through the instruction of David A. Leffel. Her work has earned notice and respect with awards from New York art shows such as Grand Central Art Galleries, the Salmagundi Art Club, and the National Arts Club. Sherrie is the author of The Language of Drawing: From An Artists Viewpoint.

Film clips are from an interview with artist Sherrie McGraw as part of the A. Keith Brodkin Contemporary Western Artists Project. The full interview is available for viewing in the Donald C. & Elizabeth M. Dickinson Research Center, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The A. Keith Brodkin Project facilitates the collection, preservation, and accessibility of primary resources such as personal papers, studio ephemera, photographs, libraries, and other items which are often overlooked and lost to posterity and which reflect the artists life and career. Additional resources are acquired through personal oral histories via recorded interviews. Collecting these resources effectively preserves artists careers for posterity and provides future artists, art historians, educators, and researchers with documentary evidence.

8×5 Oil Painting GARY GARRETT DEMO – - Channel marker at Little Jetties

In Mid October, the First Coast Plein Air Painters had our paintout at the Little Jetties (Mayport Florida) where the St. Johns River meets the Intracoastal Waterway, just west of the Mayport Naval Station. It ws beautiful! The wiregrass was in full pink/burgundy blooms. I painted a12x16 acrylic there and shot 100+ photos.

This 8×5 inch oil fine-grained canvas panel painting is from one of those photos looking west. My palette is WHITE-CAD YELLOW LIGHT & MEDIUM – CAD RED – CRIMSON – ULTRAMARINE BLUE -PAYNE’S GREY & WHITE. My medium is DRYING LINSEED OIL & LIQUIN IMPASTO gel. All paints & mediums are Winsor & Newton. The undercoat is painted with brushes and papertowels, the color coat is painted with a small palette knife.

I want to know how to tell if a glass egg I bought at a yard sale is a real fenton art pedistal egg?

This egg is glass with hand painted by: mike lemon written on the back. It also has a sticker on the back that says Fenton 1989. It is made with a pedistal attached also made of glass. Its white irridesent
with pink and purple tulips painted on one side. I would like to know its value also. I got it at a yard sale for .25 cents. I have already tried looking on Fenton art glass website, but I could not find any thing listed with that date. I dont know any other way of looking it up on the web.

No matter what You did very well for paying 25 cents for your egg!
From the reasearch that I have done it looks they go from $65.00/ $70.00 and UP, UP,UP.

Beginning in the mid-1980s, Fenton began to create annual groupings of special colors, such as Pink Opalescent and Topaz Opalescent. Once called "Collector’s Extravaganza," these offerings evolved into the limited edition "Historic Collections" which continue today. Each Historic Collection color has admirers, but some are especially noteworthy: More on next site ;http://aarf.com/fentons05.htm

Many of their newer creations made since 1973 are already very collectible. These pieces are marked with an oval shaped raised logo Fenton molded directly into the glass. More next site;

What are the most important art shows/contests in the world for contemporary artists?

The type of art shows I am referring to referring to would include still lifes, portraits, figure paintings, interiors, and landscapes in a classical realism style.

In order to get to the big leagues, you have to start with some regional shows.

www.artshow.com
www.artdeadlines.com

list all kinds of contests. Make sure you have really really good slides of your work. If your slides are crappy or mediocre, you won’t get in to many shows and you’ll be wasting those entry fees.

What paintings do the Museum of Modern Art have?

How do you remove crayon from an old oil painting?

I have an old oil painting my great grandmother made over 20 years ago.

Sometime in the last 10 years, a child drew on it with crayon. I’d like to remove the crayon without damaging the painting.

So, if anyone has any for sure ideas on how to remove crayon from oil paint, please help me.

Thank you for your time.

Crayons and oil paint are made of the same stuff, so unfortunately anything that will remove the crayon will also remove the paint. Take it to a professional painting restorer, they will scrape off the crayon by hand under a microscope.
